Home Care in East Lansing MI
When is the last time that you did a thorough safety check in your loved one's home? If it's been a while, you might want to start with one or more of these ideas.
Electrical Cords
Check first to make sure that electrical cords are out of the path of traffic. Then make sure that they're not frayed or worn, which can cause a fire hazard. Make sure also that there aren't staples or nails that pierce the cord anywhere. If necessary, rearrange furniture so that outlets are more readily available.
Smoke Detectors
Make sure that there's at least one smoke detector on every floor of your loved one's home. If the home is a ranch style home, place at least one on each end of the home. Check the batteries and make sure that the smoke detectors are properly placed. Most fire departments will come out to check smoke detectors for you, if you're not sure that yours are situated correctly.
Kitchen Dangers
Does your loved one have loose throw rugs in the kitchen? If so, these can be a slipping hazard. Consider taping them down or moving them to another area. While you're in the kitchen, check that towels and curtains are away from open flames or other areas where they might catch fire. Check your loved one's range exhausts as well to make sure they're working properly.
Bathroom Safety
Safety in the bathroom is especially important. If there aren't any hand rails, consider installing them. Check for loose throw rugs and any cords that might be in the way. While you're in the bathroom, check the hot water to make sure that it isn't too hot. If it does feel too hot, turn the thermostat down on the hot water heater.
Lighting
In every area of your loved one's home, check the lighting. Make sure that all of the light sources work properly and that they have the appropriate light bulbs installed. If any bulbs are burned out or the fixture doesn't seem to be working properly, make sure that they get changed or fixed. If there isn't enough lighting, add lamps or change out the fixtures for brighter ones.
Consider bringing in a home care provider to help ensure your senior loved one's safety at home.
