Elder Care Recipes: National Hamburger Month

Elder Care in Okemos MI

Elder Care in Okemos MIMay is National Hamburger Month, the perfect opportunity for you to bring your senior out into the fresh air and enjoy some quality time with the rest of your family having a cookout. While you could grab a few pounds of ground beef or some pre-made patties in order to make hamburgers for your cookout, trying something new is a great way to not only make your meal more interesting and delicious, but also to keep up with your elder care goal of giving your parent exceptional nutrition.

This recipe trades the beef for turkey, but bumps up the flavor with ingredients reminiscent of a club sandwich. Make your burger "authentic" by toasting the bread.

What You Will Need

  • 6 slices of center cut bacon
  • 2 pounds of ground turkey breast
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • 1 small onion
  • 2 plum tomatoes
  • Bibb lettuce
  • Up to sixteen slices of white bread or 8 burger buns
  • Flat leaf parsley

  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • 1 tablespoon of hot sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of poultry seasoning
  • A griddle pan or an outdoor grill
  • A skillet
  • Paper towels
  • A large bowl
  • A sharp knife
  • A cutting board
  • A grater
  • A food processor
  • A baking sheet
  • A 3 inch round cookie cutter (if not using burger buns)

What to Do

  • Use the sharp knife to finely chop the parsley, dill and chives and set aside
  • Finely chop the garlic clove and set aside
  • Use the sharp knife to thinly slice the tomatoes and set aside
  • Juice the lemon and set aside
  • Preheat the grill or griddle pan to medium high heat
  • Place a skillet over medium high heat with a drizzle of olive oil
  • When the pan is hot, add the bacon to it
  • Cook the bacon for about 5 minutes, until crisp
  • Remove the bacon and drain it on the paper towels
  • When drained and cooled, chop the bacon and set aside
  • Place the ground turkey breast into the large bowl
  • Use the grater to grate the onion on top of the turkey and get 4 or so tablespoons of onion juice
  • Add the poultry seasoning, hot sauce, salt to taste and a good bit of pepper to the large bowl
  • Add the bacon to the bowl
  • Mix, by hand, the ingredients in the bowl and begin to form patties
  • Form 8 patties about 3 inches wide
  • Drizzle each patty with olive oil to lightly coat them
  • Place the patty on the griddle or grill to cook
  • Cook about 8 to 10 minutes, turning once, until cooked all the way through
  • While the sliders are cooking, preheat the broiler
  • In the food processor, add the avocado, sour cream, garlic, parsley, dill, chives and lemon juice
  • Season the mix with some salt and pepper to taste
  • Process until it becomes a thick but smooth sauce
  • If not using slider buns, use the cookie cutter to cut rounds out of the bread and discard the crusts
  • Arrange the bread on the baking sheet
  • Lightly drizzle olive oil on the inside of the bread
  • Toast the bread under the broiler, removing when it has toasted well, but is not burnt
  • Add the sliders to the bread, along with the avocado ranch sauce, lettuce and tomatoes
  • Serve warm
